My decision would be to fish to my strengths and keep it very simple. The information I could find mainly centred around pellet fishing so I set my stall out to attack my peg this way with meat as a back-up approach.

Our plan was to make sure we arrived at The Oaks in plenty of time to have a look around the complex and eat a nice breakfast before the all in. Unfortunately the M62 had other ideas and 2 junctions were closed. A lengthy detour saw us arrive at about 9.

After a few hellos to some other local Wigan lads in the draw queue it was my turn to draw and I pulled out Peg 25 on Maple Lake. A rushed bacon and egg sandwich and Gary dropped me off near Maple a little later than expected.

This water is one of the older lakes on the complex and is a mature snake lake with 64 pegs. My peg was at the far end of the water and near a corner and looked great with Oaks sessay lining both the near and far bank. Maple Peg 25 I made the decision Oaks sessay fish 4 areas of the peg in the match.

An edge line on my top 4 and a line at around 11 meters towards the spare peg on my left. Both lines were 3ft deep and I would fish banded pellet.

I also set up a line across near the sedges at 13m where it was around 2ft deep and a line in the track on my top 5 in about 5ft of water. On these lines I would begin by fishing meat.

The start of the match was delayed 30 minutes so we would be fishing At the all in I put around pieces of meat on the track line and decided to start on banded pellet at 11m. I started by tapping in a few 4mm feed pellets every 30 seconds or so via a sprinkle pot, keeping everything in a small area.

I was quickly into fish and a lovely carp around 3. This was followed by another couple of small carp. With the line fading I dropped into the track on the meat line.

I had been feeding meat by hand sporadically since the start of the match and I hoped this would produce a few fish. First drop in the float buried and a carp was safely netted. Unfortunately this was the only bite I had on this line too. I was struggling with meat so I decided to swap the hook length to banded pellet and moved to another clump of reeds across and tried this for around 10 minutes.

This never worked either, confirming my thoughts about the fish not wanting to be in the shallow depths. It was clear that the 11m banded pellet line was the strongest but I needed another line to work as I would catch a few fish here and the line would go quiet for a while.

I made the decision to start feeding my margin a little earlier than I would normally because I had noticed a couple of anglers near me were picking the odd fish up from their margin swims.

Here I loose fed 4mm pellet and fished banded pellet over the top. The rest of the match saw me concentrate my efforts with the Joof rig both in the margins and at 11m. I decided to make my rig more positive by bulking my 2 droppers together after reading about this in the latest pole fishing magazine in an article by Des Shipp.

I also shortened my line above the float as the wind had subsided. This seemed to work well and I did hit more bites. I noticed that 6mm pellet also brought much more missed bites than 4mm which I found strange considering all the fish bar 1 that I caught where carp including some nice ghosties The last hour or so of the match saw the guy on peg 22 catching frequently in the margin and me also picking up fish.

I knew I had beaten everyone else in eyesight and hoped I had done enough to at least win the section. The all out was called and I was pleased with how I had fished and it was clear Maple had fished relatively difficult near me.
